Creative photographer, fellow Rappahannock native, jewelry designer & Rumors frequenter Jessica Boutte recently borrowed some items from the shop for a photo shoot. The results were beautiful, and they are now featured on the front page of the Rumors online store.

Casey: Has living in Richmond influenced your work at all? If so, what do you find inspiring about this city?
Jessica: Richmond has definitely influenced my work. Being the first place I’ve lived outside of miles of farmland, it has really pushed me to expand my ideas beyond relying upon beautiful scenery for my photos. I’ve learned to find the hidden spark of an urban area. Richmond in particular is inspiring to me because of it’s acceptance of the dirt and grime- you develop a taste for the underground elegance and charm of the small city’s inhabitants and infrastructure.

Casey: What is your major and why did you decide to come to VCU?
Jessica: I just finished my Art Foundations year here at VCU. My decision was ultimately made by the desire to be surrounded by open-minded, creative people in an urban setting. It helps that VCU’s Art Program is one of the best in the country.
Casey: You grew up near me, in Rappahannock county. How has the transition from country to city been?
Jessica: Harsh, but nice. Coming from the Shenandoah National Park area, it’s great to all of a sudden be able to walk to the store or to school. Noise pollution is, though, the biggest change. Falling asleep to cicadas and cows is a lot different than falling asleep to police sirens and car horns.

Casey: When you’re not busy being creative, where do you like to hang out?
Jessica: I got very lucky with my roommate Nora, this past year. She and I like to explore the different food options Richmond has to offer. Most recently, I’ve developed an affinity for Kuba Kuba and their fantastic fried plantains. Other places I’ve liked thus far have been The Black Sheep and, of course, Crossroads for coffee.
Daycare Swindlers, the punk band from DC & Rappahannock, play a lot in Richmond, but I’ve yet to miss an under 21 show they’ve put on. The Camel is definitely my favorite venue, recently my friends and I went to the Andrew Jackson Jihad show and had a great time.

Casey: You’ve made jewelry and platform shoes for Rumors in addition to taking some awesome photos. What is your medium of choice?
Jessica: When I go to make a drawing, always mechanical pencil. But I don’t mess around too much with physical mediums anymore, really. My preference is anything Photoshop based- I rely on my pen and tablet a whole lot.
Casey: How would you describe your work to someone?
Jessica: I would like to just describe it as awesome and leave it at that. But in reality, it’s more like 20% fashion editorial and 80% underfunded sci-fi movie.

Casey: In a dream world, what will you be doing in 10 years?
Jessica: In a dream world, I will have already cloned myself about 8 times in the next ten years- giving me the ability to pursue all of my career goals at once- from being a conceptual photographer for expensive British magazine to computer software engineer to part-time astronaut.

It’s been about almost a month since I met Breena & Jessica at the Trunk Show Thursday of Rva Fashion Week but only recently have I found them on facebook & I fell in love with the designs all over again!

100% of these pieces are made from real animal bones, fur, & human teeth.
Below are my favorite pieces from the trunk show at gallery 5.
Check out the rings made from human teeth !
& don’t worry —no animals were harmed. All pieces are acquired ethically or through local dentists.
Like our last favorite RVA Native designer, these chica’s graduated from VCU’s fashion design program & their personal style is dope as hell. Follow the Facebook page here: Facebook.
Their eclectic designs can be purchased here at Extollo Jewelry!

If you are without a bottle opener but have a chainsaw handy, you can still enjoy that cold beer.
With his brand new UK based style blog the Skatorialist, photographer Sam Ashley focuses on the fashion choices of skateboarders around the world. The blog is still only on it’s first page but should be fun to watch as it grows.
